I am the director of a small (80 students) charter school in which visual arts
is a major focus in our school. While our school is not a magnet school for
visual arts, we do try to incorporate it into our integrated curriculum
development. For instance, last year we did a project in which our students
studied the art periods from the 1700's through the midsixties, beginning
with rococo, neo classicism through abstract expressionism and surrealism.
This was integrated with social studies and language arts. Our goal is not so
much that our students will become artists in the narrow sense of the word,
but that they will become creative thinkers.

As we begin to expand our school, I would like information on how art teachers
are compensated. In our situation, we contract an art teacher and her aide to
conduct the art classes. Each of the three classes of students have the
formal art class once a week for about 2 hrs with classes added on for special

Please could you e-mail me any information to help me structure a compensation
schedule that reflects the fair market value of such positions as well as the
unique nature of our school.
