. A good way to explain to classroom teachers who have the students do
pattern "art" is to ask them why they don't have everyone write the same
story during English class. I I would have welcomed input from the expert
in the building. I remember that most of our art teachers were having
their classes do the kinds of work you deplore. I also remember one art
teacher who did do Santa Claus at Christmas with my 2nd. graders. They
were delightful some were huge. Some were tiny. They were all very
detailed. He seemed to be able to teach kids to really SEE what they were
creating. I recognized his merit and your atriculation of this conflict
sheds light on what I valued in him. I think you have to articulate this
to others in your school. Many will be eager to learn from you. I admire
your enthusiasm and dedication as I read about your trials and triumphs.
