Mark-
I have used sketchbooks in many different ways and have graded them also in a
variety of ways. Currently, in my required middle school classes, the
students make a simple sketchbook and use it daily for notetaking, responses
to the assignment or to their work for the day, to record a daily vocab word
and definition and to respond to a question of the day in addition to
thumbnail sketches for their projects. I use weekly drawing assignments in an
elective class and I try to vary those assignments between representational
and imaginative assignments. I "grade" all work by counting it -- awarding
points for doing it to an acceptable level of quality. I always respond to
their work also by writing a personal note. I've had varying results with
sketchbook assignments that are homework .
