Mark,
I teach high school in southwest Virginia, near the Tennessee
border. All my students draw for 10 minutes every day on what I call
"sketchbook pages". Each Monday they receive one sheet of xeroxed
sketchbook pages with a theme for the week. Last week's theme was "What
Pathfinder really found on Mars". They keep the pages in their looseleaf
notebook and turn them into me on Fridays. I grade them and return them
to them on Mondays...instead of calling roll, I hand back pages and kill
two birds with one stone. Sketchbook pages usually count for 40% of the
six weeks grade. I use the computer to grade, so averages and things are
easy.
I vary themes from imaginative to realistic drawing from life from week to
week and I grade based on effort, following directions and complexity of
design.
Let me know if you want more info such as the formal lesson plan on
sketchbook pages. If you want the actual page to use, I will need your
home address as I don't know how to send a drawing (Clarisworks draw) over
the internet.
I have in years past tried using sketchbooks and have not been
successful.
This has been very successful...my third year of using them.
Hope this helps. Heidi McElroy
