I put a quote on my chalkboard every day of the year. Last year I would
sometimes point them out, sometimes not. Often I would just let the kids
notice them. Many would write down the ones they liked. The quotes ran the
gamut from inspirational to humorous.

I think that this year I am going to have the students write the quotes down,
and comment on them, in their sketchbook. That will be their "get settled"
assignment when they first walk in the room.

At some point last year I asked people if they wanted a copy, and I will make
the offer again now. I have every single quote I used, and they apparently
will fit into the body of an e-mail (I just checked). There are some really
wonderful ones. So those of you who would like a copy just e me, and those
who got the quotes back in ... February?, you can get the whole school year's
worth if you e me again!

A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be
stabbed to death by a joke or worried to death by a frown on the right
person's brow. -Charles Brower
