For several years I have had my students make a sketch book out of folded
legal size photo copy paper. For some reason the district had boxes of it
that our copier didn't like so I'm slowly using it up. I have the kids
fold 4 sheets in half and do that 8 times so that the book has 64 pages.
They line up their 8 bundles within a cover ( I've used several
things--marbelized paper, construction paper--white paper they can draw on
etc.) Then we hold it together with clothes pins and drill 5/64" holes
about 1/2 inch apart. We sew with kite string or crochet thread. It
really makes a tough book--I've had kids try to tear them up at the end of
the term and they couldn't--they were impressed!! When the kids get to
drill their books they are transfixed. It seems so official. Of course
you have to watch them or they'll drill all the pencils, tables, boxes
etc. Anyway it makes a great sized little book they --or I --can carry
around to sketch in . Sid
