Should an English teacher be a practicing writer, should a math teacher be
a practicing mathematician? I personally don't think that good teachers
have to _work_ additionally in the field to do an exceptional job in
teaching it. I do think that educators have to be responsible
professionals and keep up with the fields of art and education and art
education. If they have desire and time to create and sell their work,
that's a choice (though many I know who do have to work part time at both)
but not a necessity.
