I do a project with plastic medicine droppers also. 6th grade students
take a small piece of white paper (5 X 9 "). Students dop 5 - 7 drops
of black india ink onto the paper in random areas. With a staw they
blow the ink around the paper. This is rather messy and india ink can
stain clothes. Make sure the class is mature enough for this project.
(We do place newspaper under the project also). The ink creates spidery
webs all over the paper. After drying students paint between the black
lines to create an abstract design. They use watercolor. I limit them
to a color scheme depending on the lesson. Ex: cool colors, warm,
analagous, complementary etc. They mix from the colors to create new
colors within each area of the paper, but the paper must have an overall
scheme. They really seem to enjoy it.
P.S. Make sure the ink is dry before painting or it will run.
