Some of you asked what my position is---I am the Fine Arts Chair for
Wichita High School South, Wichita, Kansas. Last year our school
district required all subject matter areas to work on assessment tools,
so we (district art teachers)have devised several tools for this task.
I sat on several committees to develop assessment tools, but the one I
worked on most is called the Art Progress Rating Guide. Our district
had already adopted a writing assessment tool called the Analytical
Rating Guide; it was not developed here in Wichita. We used the A.R.G.
as a model to develop the Art Progress Rating Guide. The idea is to
have all students do an assigned task at the beginning of the year; we
record scores, give a post test and compare the two scores. This tool
is obviously experimental. We have already gone through numerous
revisions. It's not perfect but has helped somewhat to develop more
consistency in evaluating work. It will be interesting to see how
students do over a several year period.
