I get a picture of common animals and
lay a piece of clear plastic over it and ask students
to help me brainstorm what shapes make up the animal.

LOVE this! I was thinking about doing something like this. This is an
awesome way to illustrate it and have them work through it with you. I have a
sheet of plexiglass that would work great -- and then I am assuming I can use
dry-erase markers to draw the shapes on it?

Then I was thinking I would give them some pictures of animals and pieces of
tracing paper and let them do some on their own.
