I have a digital portfolio for all of my LS students, grades 2,3,5. I
photograph all work at the end of a project, put it on the web, and then
drop a copy of each students work into tables that I create for each
class. Each class has a Word table that is one column, 22 rows when I
set it up. This week before school, I will be setting them up. I type
each child's name in a row, and save it in my documents in a class
folder labeled "portfolios" When I want to load each child's newly
completed work in the portfolio, I grab my trusty Powershot S60
wondercamera, shoot the group of photos, size them for web use (not to
exceed 320 pixels in any direction), and once that is done, I simply
drag and drop the photos into the table for each child. The whole
process for 20 kids at a time takes me about 30 minutes. That way, I
can display the work around school (we have a LOT of display space) and
when it is time for new display, I have parent volunteers who take down
the old work and hang new work for me. The work is returned to kids in
their classroom by whoever changes the display. I have 2 or 3 parent
volunteers signed up at the beginning of the year to change out artwork
for us. Sometimes I even let them matt work, but usually I do that.
They are a godsend and do a very nice job. They think it's fun to hang
the work and get to see everybody's work. The beauty of a digital
portfolio is that when I do comments, I can see everything a child has
done for the quarter or the year. It makes it very easy for me to write
meaningful comments that way. I remember the days of sitting down at a
table with a zillion pieces of 18x24 work to handle and how long that
took before I could write informed comments on each child. I can now
see at a glance the direction a child is headed, their quirks, gifts,
idiosyncracies, foibles, efforts, etc. I can't imagine life in my art
room without this digital portfolio for my students. At the end of the
year I can print out each child's portfolio and hand it back to students
or put it into their final parent conference folder.
