With its broken-down spine, brittle pages and faded illustrations, "The
Day of the Dog: A Love Story" seemed destined for the dumpster or the
recycling bin, or wherever else once-beautiful books met their end.

Until Rosemary Mans laid eyes on the 99-year-old romance novel.
