I am also doing a mandala lesson with 5th graders this year. I
simplified it somewhat and stressed the radial design element more.
Their mandalas had to be about them. It couldn't just be designs. I
mentioned adding items that said something about them. For instance, if
they like to read, they might add a book. If they are into drawing,
they could use a pencil as a symbol. We left the religious part out. I
have many cultures, countries, etc., represented in my school and I
couldn't risk offending anyone. I have found the many children aren't
good with rulers, compasses, and protractors!!!!! I'll post photos on
my schools web site in a few weeks when we finish. There are 30 kids in
each of these classes, of all abilities.
