Dear Mikel,
Middle schoolers are terribly wonderful and wonderfully terrible. They are
energizing and draining. They are insightful and inciteful. On Monday they
will bowl you over with something brilliant, and on Friday they will do
something so dumb you won't believe it.
They act like they own the world and they feel completely powerless. They
are sullen and insolent one minute, and giggly and silly the next. Every day
brings a hundred dramas.
Just when you feeling worn out, unappreciated, and are ready to chuck it all
(and you will sometimes wonder why on earth you are doing this) you'll find a
note on your desk that says "Thanks," or "I'm sorry," or even, "You're
great."
I've taught all grade levels, but the past 13 years in Middle is the most
challenging, exciting, exhausting, joyful, gut wrenching--and rewarding job
I've ever had. I hope you love it.
