I have always heard that "Fine Arts" referred to art that is not craft.
So ceramics and weaving, textiles, would be considered craft by these
standards. Just like in painting and drawing, to me, there is FINE
painting and drawing and sketchi, srudies, etc. that are not finished or
refined. Personally, I think of Guild type crafts that are so
excellent, as fine art as well. Jewelry would be considered a craft,
not a fine art, under those standards. There is some art jewelry that
is magnificent and complex, definitely above the rank of "crafty". It
IS vague, and I think standards for fine crafts have evolved into fine
art, but who cares what I think in the lofty land of "FINE ART". Our
department at school is called the Fine Arts, and it does include dance,
theater and music, as well as art. I have a BA in Fine Arts and I
majored in ceramics, so go figure!
