Re: Contract - we might strike, class size

Date: Wed Aug 27 2003 - 06:55:39 PDT

Our district has not had a contract with teacher for two years. We are
battling because we a re the lowest in our area and they has deceived us and are
trying to break us and it seems they are in a power struggle. Tuesday afternoon
our union had a strike vote and it was passed with 83% yes. I am now in the
position to have to decide to strike or not. My kids will be supportive but a
strike affects my retirement and it is not a pretty sight. I am prepared to
go but I have my reservations. All I want to do is teach but this has been
going on too long. We will have to see what the next few weeks will bring.

Benefits are a big issue but so is class size. I have only 30 work stations
and toes and drawing boards for my class. It is a small room and fitting
anything else in their is next to impossible. Art 1 classes are at 37.38 with the
others at 32. I am the lowest in our dept. with 40-43 in Art 1 for my
colleague. They will not hire new teachers and instead have a 38-1 ratio. Classes
were canceled because they were only at 32. It's a mad house and I am going
to go in a few minutes to that class of 38. The kids suffer as much as we do
because they don't even have a chair.

Thanks for being a sound board
