Courage to Teach is a book by Parker Palmer. It is about getting to know
yourself as a teacher and as a person. He has devised a series of retreats for up
to 24 teachers, with two facilitators.
There have been two in the New England area so far, overseen by Lesley
College. We meet for a weekend every three months, or four times a year, for two
years. We work in small and large groups, and journal a lot. There are poems
for prompts and much discussion. It makes for a rejuvenating weekend. Some
teachers have gone back to their schools and begun discussion groups centered
around the book.
Last year they skipped a year because they tried to get an administrators'
group going. Only four joined from the whole New England area. They tried having
just a 3-weekend with a follow up weekend. That, also didn't fly. So this
past year they invited teachers. We began our cycle last November.
Look up the book. It's quite wonderful. I found it while perusing the
education section at Borders' Books. I had no idea there were retreats, at that time.
