Bon jour everyone! (that is one I already know - I know how to say good by
but forget how to spell it - help me out Ann, Merci!)
Maori salutation,"Kia ora", which means hello and/or goodbye.
"We" are teaching tomorrow's world leaders....Get them to really appreciate
the world in which they live. Get them to respect and admire world
cultures/indigenous cultures....and do get them to respect and understand
the good in what all cultures believe. There are "truths" that bridge all
cultures.
When you do your Australian/New Zealand units - Great your students with Kia
Ora (new to me). Maybe print out some greetings to give to your elementary
and middle school kids from many world cultures. Last year we did "Peace" on
the Getty list - I'll see if I save those posts. (I bet high school kids
would be hip
to learning a little world languages, too?)
I just learned Hawaii this summer from Cathy Kerch (new middle school
teacher) Mahalo (new to me) and Aloha
Aloha
[Alo = presence, front, face] + [hâ = breath]
"The presence of (Divine) Breath."
Mahalo
[Ma = In] + [hâ = breath] + [alo = presence, front, face]
"(May you be) in (Divine) Breath."
Think of them as single-word blessings or prayers.
Aloha. 1. Aloha, love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathy, pity,
kindness, sentiment, grace, charity; greeting, salutation, regards;
sweetheart, lover, lover, loved one; beloved, loving, kind, compassionate,
charitable, lovable; to love, be fond of; to show kindness, mercy, pity,
charity, affection; to venerate; to remember with affection; to greet, to
hail. Greetings! Hello! Good-by! Farewell! Alas!
Mahalo. 1. Thanks, gratitude; to thank.
I am NOW saving these in a folder. As you do units - post the greetings and
I will add to them and get them on the site so NEXT year so new folks will
have
them all in one pace. (I'll try to do it as I go along - but I can not make
promises I may not be able to keep).
Let us at least shoot for these greetings/words: Peace, hello, good bye,
thank you, you are welcome
I'll see what I can do to help.
Bryce - if you are still reading, give me as many New Zealand/Australian
ones you know. Cathy, if you are still reading - include them on your lesson
plan for Kapa cloth.
