Re: Artist first or teacher first?

Date: Sat Aug 02 2003 - 17:22:04 PDT

I just completed a wonderful two-week course at the Philadelphia Museum of
Art for teachers, and of the art teachers who attended, I was one of very few
artists. It seemed like the non-artists were leaning toward improving their
pedagogy. The artists were looking forward to spending the month of August on
various creative projects. All were there at the Museum to better themselves
and help their students become more attuned to looking at works of art.

I worked in the Division of Education there in the 1980s, and even then I was
in the minority among the art historians and art educators. I am with Martha
when she says the person has to have a love for teaching the arts. Like her,
I am teaching as a second career, while still making and exhibiting and
selling my art. This will be my first year as art teacher - from a cart this year
while our school expansion is happening! Then I will have an art classroom -
so exciting!!!
