i would have to go with the blind contour method of poking your pencil
through a sheet of paper and drawing "blind" - without being able to see
your drawing because the paper shields it from view. (this was brought up
recently on the list). also i would have them draw something that is so
irregular and unfamiliar that they have to draw what they see instead of
what they know. others mentioned animal skulls, sea shells, but the coolest
idea was (marvin's i think) the bicycle that was bent like it had been hit
by a car. i'm scouring streets on trash pick-up day looking for a good

ps. can't you just see some guy having his morning coffee, looking out his
window and seeing a woman dressed for work stop and put his kid's old bent
up bicycle in the back of her car...he'd be scratching his head and
wondering what the heck was in his coffee. LOL
