Re: disease/tragedy of the week

I agree with you -- we don't need to stress kids (especially elementary age
kids) about all of society's problems. I think it's good to let the kids
bring it up and allow conversations based on the class's needs. Our school
(a high school) has initiated a bell ringing ceremony around the school flag.
 Each student and teacher will get a commemorative bell and ring it for 1
minute followed by 1 minute of silence. Several area schools also took up
this initiative and a grant was acquired to buy bells for all. I think
that's a nice way to honor the victims, their families and the heroes of 9-11
without bringing further stress to kids. I think it was totally appropriate
to talk a LOT about the tragedy in its immediate aftermath.
