I wanted to update you on the large class. When it was still at 40 after 2
weeks, I took matters into my own hands. I chose 8 10th graders and
personally walked them to the counselors. We walked it and I said, "Here are
the students who need to have their schedule changed. Thank you." Their
mouths dropped open, I smiled, and left. It worked!!! They changed their
schedules. I told one of the counselors later that I didn't like having to
send those students down. It was embarrassing to me, them, and the school. I
hope they won't do it again. So now, we are at a lovely 33.
I also found out they do not check for prerequisites. I have 3's who haven't
have 2, 2's with no 1's, etc. Also, we are on a year (1 credit) plan, but
they will put someone in 1a, drop them at Christmas to play golf, and then
put them into 2a the next year!!!
AHHHHH!!!!! I sent them a copy of the prerequisites.
I cant really do anything more about it right now. So I will teach the
advanced class as 3's (allowing for less or more) and just begin to build a
program. Next year I will know who doesn't have the prerequisite to be in an
Now I am getting excited about teaching them. I realized....it is so nice
when you are just in the classroom teaching. It is all the junk we have to do
outside of class to raise awareness of our program that can get disheartening
in the face of those who don't appreciate what we do. But the kids are
wonderful and excited about taking art. So, on we go into a new year. Thanks
for all the advice!!
