I teach high school in a rather challenging school although it is totally
safe. I use my own teachagers to guide me through how to act the first week.
I think it's an old Catholic school opinion that teachers should not let the
students see them smile until Thanksgiving. Of course I'm joking. Or am I?
When you think your words the first day are pearls, remember that every
teacher is saying the same thing and that the kids are really not paying
attention all that much. I'm especially nervous at the start of school
because I'm real bad at learning names. This makes me so uncomfortable the
first few weeks. I've found the best policy is to laugh at myself when I get
a name wrong. I say something like....I'm here because I can teach art, not
because I can learn your names quickly. Tues. is my first day. EAC
