Dear Joe,
  I hear that one a lot too- "Don't smile until December"...Well, I have
never been able to hold out that long. (smiling or having fun, myself) I
think there are plenty of ways to gain/hold respect without acting like
Cruella DeVille.
You sound like you have found a nice middle ground to stand on.
How long have you been teaching? What level? Where?
