painting on metal

Hi! My principal has asked if my 5th grade art club would paint some metal
garbage cans for a local park. I said yes because my club loves doing
public service projects. However, I'm not sure how to paint the cans so
they will last in the outdoor elements of southwestern Pennsylvania. Any
tips?
