The Metropolitan Museum of Art is showing a retrospective of Gauguin's
work this summer. I was amazed at the amount of mediums that he tackled, from
oil paintings, wood carving, ceramics, and printmaking. He challenged
himself. He was as hard working as Van Gogh. This summer I can honestly say
that I found a focus for my own art: to constantly try new colors, new
subjects, and new compositions. Also he stated "don't sweat over a painting,
a great sentiment can be rendered immediately." A good lesson for painters
like me who ponder too long on a composition until it becomes overdone.
