We have 80 min blocks so I do talk about course expectations (for about 15-20
min or so) I almost NEVER LECTURE MORE THAN 20-30 min! After that we do an
activity. Some things that have worked well for me are...
-3D name plates see the paper sculptures under Art 2 at:
            http://www.geocities.com/kschiavo00/Art1Art2.html However
this activity takes
approximately the entire first week. Activity first -then lecture
on the design process and
            problem solving techniques.
-Draw popcorn from memory- then again from actual observation
-Discuss the differences between the two pictures.
Also used this activityit with oreo cookies too! (every one has
eaten an oreo)
-An activity where I verbally give them 10 things to draw- they can
not ask me any questions -they just must do what I say. After the 10 things-
I talk a bit about perception and how everyone percieves things differently.
I then give them a 5 min break while I tack the pictures on the board. Its
really cool- cause they crowd around me and awe at the different drawings.
Even thou I gave everyone the same directions- each drawing was distintly
different. They like that one a lot and often bring their friends back to
the room to see their drawing.
Depending upon the grade level, time of year and/or course I am
teaching, my activities for the students will change. I have had my Art 2
students take off their shoe and draw it 4 different ways as a "review/quiz"
to what they have learned in Art 1.
         Hope this helps.
