We made musical instruments in a class last summer. I made a rain stick with
a wrapping paper paper tube. Covered it with wrapping paper, punched holes
in it with either tiny nails or sewing needles. Dropped a handful of dried
beans down in it and it worked great! Sounded almost like my authentic one
which is made from a cactus stem.
Aluminum foil pie pans glued together and hole-punched with rice or beans
inside and ribbons tied through the hole punches make good tambourines.
I've made maracas from golf balls and popsicle sticks and a little masking
tape.
And you can actually make flutes from bamboo if it is a year or two old and
thick enough to carve little finger holes and a lip piece.
Drums from big coffee cans.
Base fiddle from an old ice washtub, broom pole and string.
