I pass out large squares of construction paper that match the colors in My
Many Colored Days, by Dr. Seuss. We read the book and when your color comes
up...you wave your color. It involves the kids and lets you see how well
they know their colors. Then I have them draw a self-portrait on their
portfolio about how they feel the first day of school.
Then they have a choice of free drawing, looking at books or playing with
blocks. The other thing I do is take a field trip to the bathroom...this
year I am going to put arrows on the wall..because it never fails...I always
loose a few kinders who go to the bathroom the first few weeks of school!!!
yikes! I have to call down to the office and send out a search party for
them!!!
I have all my students for one hour....I even keep the kinders for the full
hour on the first day...I figure..where else are they going to go? It always
seems to work very well!
