I photographed the opening of Amanda Dunbar's show in West Palm Beach on July
18 & 19. I was very impressed with her as a person and as an artist. She is
now 18 and attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas as an art
history major. She is originally from Ottawa, Canada.
The gallery had sponsored an art contest for children in association with
"Stop the Violence" and had a special time during the day set aside for
children to come and meet Amanda. She also did an acrylic overpaint for
them, which then went on sale. She is a sweet, sincere individual who
relates to both children and adults.
She took her first art class at 13. After about 5 weeks the instructor
called her parents in and had all her work lined up. She has great natural
abilities for drawing and color. They have resisted giving her formal art
instruction, prefering to allow her to progress naturally.
However much her abilities increase as she matures, she will remain a great
person. And those she has met will be better off knowing her. She points
out that as art programs were withdrawn from our schools, student violence
increased. She pushes for a return of art into the curriculum. BTW, she
feels that angels guide her!
