electives and music VS art

I was just informed today that our district is considering having the
"specials"( don't ya just love that term) going to electives for our 8th
grade. There are a number of reasons, but one of them is that the honors Art
class- Art Studio causes a conflict for kids who are also in band and chorus.
I actually have kids in Art Studio that are in all three!- Studio , band and
chorus. Some days I excuse them to go to practice if there is a special
concert or competition coming up. Otherwise those 3 programs run at the some
time( 6th hour which is a study hall time). Art Studio kids are excused(from
band or chorus) on Mondays and Tuesdays to attend my class( it only meets those
2 days). Then they go to the music classes the rest of the week. Usually it
works out pretty well- compromising- but one of the music people wants it
changed.
But now they want kids to chose between Studio or a band and chorus.
How can I woo kids over to my class when they get special privileges like
shopping at the mall when they do their Christmas concerts or all their friends
join chorus to get out of classes for all the many field trips . AND then there
is the fact that the music people go an recruit kids in 5th gr. before they
come to the middle school for band. Kids have told me I can't take The Studio
class because my parents bought an instrument in 5th grade and won't let me
quit when they really want too! So they stay with band.
I just wish things could be more fair.
And do I fight to keep all 8th graders taking art or do you think electives
would be ok?
