hello christine,
i also have a file of nat'l. geo and others. they come in handy when
teaching them to use color pencils. however, the best tool i've found for
drawing from life is an index card with a small rectangle cut out and
letting the students "compose" their drawings. i most often use the mag. pix
for contour drawing.
