PIctures are fine as a resource. Elementary students are not as
concerned about realism as are middle schoolers, though later
elementary students may be interested. I have a bunch of taxidermied
animals that fascinate the kids. They really like to draw them. For
middle through high school I assign one 20 minute drawing a night
from life. It can be a household object, a family member or pet,
things the child has in his/her room. These are marked with a date
and put in a folder. Toward the end of the year I choose 10 drawings
from the early months of the folder and ask the student to go back to
the subject and draw it to see how much their observation skills have
