Try torn pieces of brown and black paper covered with spackling compound...I
had access to the large school rolls...this can be done on paper bags as well.

history...design...other pertinent information

1 students tear the paper into large irregular shapes
2 students glue the pieces together...18"x18"approximately...you can go
larger or smaller
3 teacher spreads spackling compound on the surface...how much is your
call...let dry over night
4 students can paint designs on the rock like texture using tempera
paints...sticks, feathers or other tools besides brushes.

Display singularly or as a group wall
