FLAGS:A Hands-On Project

I am working with a 7th grade class, showing them art from various
revolutions, civil wars, etc. I'm trying to think of a hands-on project they
can do as a follow-up to the slide presentation. Many of the artworks
they'll see have flags in them so I thought I might have them make flags.
I want to set some criteria for the project that will produce
interesting results. For reference, they would have pictures of the flags of
the various countries, simple illustrations, which they could use as a
starting point. I was thinking of having them use torn paper to assemble
their flags on a backing. One criterion could be to add drama to their
designs. I guess I'm asking you to brainstorm with me on this project. If
it turns out well, the flags could be attached to sticks and they would make
a fabulous display in the classroom.
Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks, Vita
