The favorite art activity of all that I do with second grade kids is
Salty Watercolors.

Materials
matte board
salt in a tub, box, or tray
watercolors and brush
water
glue in squeeze bottle

Squeeze a design on the matte board with the glue.
Hold the matte board down in the tub and pour salt over it (liek glitter
in a way).
Sake off extra salt.
Gently touch a very full, wet brush of paint to the salt and watch the
colors shoot through the salt. Do not "scrub" - very gently touch the
point only to the salt.
Dry for an hour or so.

Note: Salt cracks and falls off if handled roughly. Sometimes I stretch
some SaranWrap over the completely dry salty design and tape to the back
to hold in any loose salt.
