While is does seem true that the unbridled and often unprincipled
capitalism of the last half of the 20th century is built on planned
obsolescence and fueled only by greed (their indifference to the
environment a symptom of that greed), the industrial barons of the
later19th early 20th century, who were just as ruthless as those today,
built to last. Their own houses and summer "cottages" may have been
designed to show off their own wealth and importance in the ultimate scheme
of things; but they also built libraries, and museums (why isn't it musea?)
and theaters and parks, and they built to last, to the general benefit.
One way to show ourselves what we really value is to consider whether or
not we would contribute to a fund to preserve it and/or work on a committee
to prevent its destruction..
