You make a good point. My school is located in the inner city of Chicago. I
have students who have seen too much in their young life,
They have seen their mamas get beaten, drunk, stoned or worse---killed in
front of them. (We lost a mama last week---she was shot by her boyfriend).
They have visited their daddies in jail. They have seen big sister have 2 or
more babies before they are 16, 17 , 18, etc. They have big brothers who are
involved in gangs--they are very familiar with the gang signs. (I hate it
when I see a little one, age 7 or 8, flash the 2 fingered Gang Disciple hand
signal in my class). They have seen their auntie or uncle ( mama's
boyfriend?!?) have sex with whomever. I have had 1st graders tell me they
heard "shootings" last night. Kindergarteners in our school already know the
"F" and "S" words. So, tell me -- wouldn't drawing be theraputic for these
children? Yes, I tell them I don't like guns, violence, etc. on their
artwork yet, I do see guns in their drawings at various times. It's part of
their life.
