I would like to send you all from the bottom of my heart here in the far
north, my condolences for the loss of all these young lives in Colorado.
I have been reading your postings and trying to understand how you feel. A
agree with those who say there is no easy explanation. My feelings would
be, that the fact so many people own guns and they are easy to get have
something to do with how many tragic shootings are in your country. It is
true that in our countries here in northern Europe it does not happen half
as much, but it happens. There are these Neo nazi groups also in some
places in Scandinavia and they have burnt churces and such. And young
people also kill here, even if it is much, much more seldom. I do believe
we the grown ups are somehow to blame. We have built the world as it is
today and maybe in the fast race for better lives we have forgotten our
children. They have been babysat by violent T.V. instead of the older
people in the family, who actually have been sent to old age homes. But as
I said before there is no easy explanation and maybe we can do little
except grow our own gardens and by that I mean taking care of our own
children and families and the children we teach. By teaching them how to be
tolerant of differences, to listen to each other and respect each other.
And to love peace.
We as teachers can contribute to this.
Today is an old holiday in Iceland; first day of summer so I wish you all a
happy summer and may the sun heal your wounds.
