doorways and gates

It strikes me that there are so many literary "gate" phrases because of the
suggesive and evocative power of the idea and the image of gate or door:
the horn and ivory gates of the true and false dreams; the gate which is
like a weir, through which all must move; the gateway of transformation, ie
the doors of perception;in many basic cultures the village entrance and
exit are defined by gates which are much more elaborate in construction and
use more valuable materials than the dwellings. Laurie Muelder
