hi all,

i'm sick about the bombing of yugoslavia, and sicker yet that we =
americans are being portrayed as not giving a flip, in general. i feel =
its more accurate to say we feel frustrated and helpless, and don't know =
what to do...

i'm tired of doing next to nothing, myself. i've written the obligatory =
letters to my congressional reps. with no satisfying feelings resulting. =
i have an idea for a visual arts, school based war protest group and =
want to know if anyone else in interested in participating.

my objective, at the least, is to give kids, teachers, and possibly =
parents who are concerned about the situation in yugoslavia a forum to =
exchange information and take action in the form of image creation =
(drawings, paintings, signs, banners, performance art, website =
creation...think of goya, picasso's guernica, and on and on; have you =
seen the book Graphic Agitation?) and display, letter writing, group =
protests/marches, and attempting to reach kosovars with donations. i =
feel this would at the minimum give people (like me!) an outlet for =
their frustration and possibly some hope that they together could make a =
difference -- i think that local news media might become interested in =
such events?

i have never done anything like this before! my general plan is that =
first i will ask if any other teachers at my school are interested (i'm =
sure i can recruit a few!) and then send out fliers and announcements to =
kids/parents about our after school organizational meeting where we will =
establish agreed upon goals and time lines and appoint duties...

the reason i'm presenting this to the group is the maxim of strength in =
numbers. i believe the effect of this type of activity would be more =
powerful if the group at my school weren't the only one, there could be =
groups at schools across the country all part of the same cause. that =
would be a bigger "story" for the media, and we could accomplish more =
together. who knows, maybe we could even march on washington?!
