In case you still need ideas on routines in art class, I have a couple that
work great. However, I teach in a Catholic school and you may not be able to
use one of the few. Some of the students line up at my door from the lunch
room. I ask for 2 lines and since there is no teacher settling them, I tell
them that the quietest line will get to go into the room first. If they are
both quiet then it's the straightest line. Sometimes it's the girls and
sometimes it's the boys but they are all motivated to get in first to choose
where they will sit. If they get three warnings while they are in the room
(distracting the class, or talking during directions) then they get assigned
seats for two weeks. It's tough to keep track of but it works. In the case
of assigned seats they are allowed to walk into the classroom when they get
there and go right to the seat. They are usually so bummed out about having
assigned seats they are settled when they sit down. Also, even if they are
calm, I always start each class with a prayer and they know to settle
themselves once that prayer is over.
