Dear Ann, I have found that if you focus on their bodies first, they focus
on others better and it improves their drawing. I do this by having them do
"joint exploration". We all stand and bend the joints, naming them (some
6th graders don't know the names!), taking active and passive poses, talk
about dynamics, proportion, basic shapes, etc.. Then I pose for them,
possibly 5 quick poses of 3 to 5 minutes, then one long one for detail.
Then we take a class, pose 3 or 4 kids to pose for about 10 minutes, then
switch again. I try to get everyone who wants to pose up for it at least
once. They are egocentric enough at this age to want to pose, they like to
draw me funny, sometimes I even wear a funny hat or tell them to turn me
into a storybook character which fits their fantasy realm, and doing quick
poses works well with their frenetic attention span. They love it. Another
twist is to have a costume box for them to wear, even shy ones will try
this. Twist on twist...have your school counselors, administrators or cooks
pose. Teachers on prep time will pose if you ask early enough and give them
the chance to read or write while posing. I have fun with figure drawing
now, but didn't always. The trick is to make it fit the kids and that's not
