If a lesson is in progress, my middle schoolers just get started when they get
to the room. Once everyone is settled, any latecomers arrive, and I take
attendance, I talk to them about what I expect for the day, and answer any
questions.

With new lessons students get their pencils and folders, sit, and wait for
instructions.

Before they leave everyone must once again be at their work areas and sit
quietly. It's a time to tell them how pleased I am with their progress (or
not), share a student's work, and tell them what will be going on at the
next class. It's a time for them to share any of their observations with me,
too. This only takes about 2-3 mins.
