I am doing this with my kids right now. But we are making
them from papier mache. They built an armature out of newspaper
and foam core (for wings, etc). Now they are doing the mache'.
Haven't started painting them yet, but they are COOL! I have my
own personal collection of animalitos and alebrijes (what they
are called in Oaxaca) and we used them for inspiration. The
kids had to take a real animal and change it in some way, like
add extra legs or wings or whatever. We sketched first, then
started building.
Just a side note, we have used a TON of masking tape. so much
that the office has forbidden me from taking any more. Now I
have to ask the kids to bring in their own. Next time I might
just use some foil as the armature. Any suggestions?

PS: I have the rainforest lesson at home. I'll send it
