When I read the message about totem poles I couldn't help thinking of
Trajan's Column (big surprise!). I think it might be interesting to ask
students to compare and contrast these two different kinds of columns. Do
they have the same functions? What are they "about"? What evidence do
they give us about the cultures that produce them? How do differences in
their form and medium contribute to their messages and functions? I wish
Ron and I had thought about them while we were writing our dialogue! This
sounds like a fascinating lesson---not surprising from a fellow Minneostan!
