Our art program at a junior high school here in Minneapolis, MN was able to
secure a grant for a well known NativeAmerican artist to come in for a week
residency to work with 8th grade students designing and building a totem
pole (in the tradition of Northwest Coast Indian culture) for the courtyard
of our school. He has an exceptional background working with all kinds of
media -- however he has never built a totem pole. We have a strong
tradition of multi-cultural lessons in our studio projects here including
Native cultures signs and symbols-- however we wonder if anyone on this list
serve has experience with building totem poles -- research or construction--
and could share some resource ideas or practical tips with us. Thanks so
much
