Hi Vickey,Glad to hear you enjoyed the D.I.A. I love going there. My 4th
grade class goes 4 days each year (through a grant given to the D.I.A. for a
few Detroit schools that do not have a regular art teacher in the school.)
During each visit the class spends time doing an art project in the studio
then breaks up into smaller groups to "explore" the museum. Unfortunately
very few children return with their families even when given free tickets.
Last year one of the projects the kids did at the D.I.A. and another that we
did at school were in the annual children's show. I got a call from the
Detroit News wanting to do a story about my children's reaction to
"seeing"their work on the walls of the D.I.A.along with all those famous
artists. I was very excited until I learned that not one child from my class
attended the show. So the newspaper had to find someone else. They were
all given free tickets too. I guess I'll have to set up a field trip and
take the whole class to see their work on display. This year a class
project we did in Social Studies will be exhibited. The show opens in May
and runs for about 3 weeks. If you get a chance you should try to see
it --------- lots of great ideas too. I haven't seen the Gorden Parks
exhibit yet, but will in the next week. Mary
