I use a rubric based on the standards for the lesson. The rubric is posted on
the board or they have a written copy. Part of the rubric is the student
written assessment in which they state the evidence that demonstrates how
they met each standard. I also have standing rubrics posted in the room. For
example when we are drawing for an assignment one standard in the rubric will
be to meet the standards of the drawing rubric. It helps so much when they
assess themselves. there is no argument except with the truly stubborn. The
value is determined and posted for each rubric at the beginning of the
assignment with emphasis placed on the new learning but with definite value
placed on applying old learning. The value must be shown up front or it does
not help the students guide their efforts. I just enter the resulting grade
in my grade book under the heading for that assignment. Then for final
assignment I merely average their grades. this is rambling and I apologize.
But it is still early for me.
