Dianna, I have saved found feathers for years, more for shape and size
variation that for different species. One of my professors in school
showed me an article in one of the print arts magazines about an artist
in the midwest who had gotten into serious legal trouble for using
feathers in her art work. I remember being surprised at the severity of
the penalty for having illegal feathers. I also remember surprise at the
number of common yard birds that were on the list of protected species.
I don't know if the laws were national or state. Sorry I don't remember
the name of the magazine but you might want to research the legal issues
around feather collecting/possession.
